Today is Groundhog day in Canada and the United States of America. It is a day seeping in history. It began in the United States by the early German settlers who settled in Pennsylvania in 1887.The folklore and tradition was first noted in Canada in 1956 in Wiarton, Ontario. The Groundhog is believed to predict if there will be 6 more weeks of winter or an early Spring. Winters can be long in Canada and some days can be very cold. The thought of an early spring and chance to be outdoors more is a welcome sign. We in Southern Ontario experienced only 4 days with moments of sunshine in the month of January. During those days there was really only glimpses of sunshine and not full sunny days.
My Grandsons called last night to tell me about Groundhog day and what seeing his shadow meant. They were excited to tell me that a sunny morning would allow the Groundhog to see their shadow predicting a longer winter. They were hoping for a cloudy morning indicating less winter and an early spring.
Today was yet another grey morning but today we are all happy there was no early morning sunshine. We are expected to enjoy a shorter winter and hopefully not a lot more snow.
In The Case at High Lake, what season is the book written in? How do you know?
One more question for you to think about: what is your favourite season and why do you like it the best?
Keep an inquisitive, questioning mind.
